Our Story

Myron’s Fine Foods, Inc. was established in the 1980’s by Myron Becker, an authority on Japanese cooking techniques. He is a professional research chef with academic degrees in psychology and food service management.

Myron was first exposed to Asian cooking while serving with the US Navy in Yokohama, Japan in the early 1960’s. When not intercepting Russian radio messages, Myron and his friends would eat at yakitori houses. To find out how the chefs created their sauces, Myron hid behind the barrels in the back of the restaurant kitchens until the chefs discovered him and threw him out.

Upon his return from duty, Myron was disappointed to find that the salty, sweet, gooey, corn syrup and gum laden sauces available in the US did not resemble the subtle and delicate renditions that he remembered from Japan. This was the inspiration for “Myron’s #1 Yakitori”, a food concession based on a Japanese yakitori restaurant. Starting with a pushcart on the streets of Amherst in 1984, the concession grew into a trailer suitable for large music festivals including the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals, Winterhawk/Grey Fox, and Falcon Ridge. When a young mother with a child on her back emptied her baby’s bottle so that she could fill it with sauce, Myron realized the opportunity and began to bottle sauce to sell on his counter. In 1987, his first commercial sale was to the owner of a natural food store in the Washington DC area who acquired a bottle and asked for more to stock on her shelves.

By 1992, serious retail production and distribution began. Myron’s concession transformed into a manufacturing company for retail. A year later, Myron discovered that a highly placed Boston chef was purchasing large quantities of the sauces for use in his restaurant. The company began packaging for the food service industry.

Nowadays, Chef Myron’s sauces can be found anywhere specialty foods are taken seriously, and used in foodservice operations as diverse as home meal delivery programs, contract management companies, white tablecloth restaurants, health and educational institutions, convention centers, caterers and country clubs. Our passion and commitment to quality continues.
